What is That Manchester App and who is it for?

That Manchester App showcases all of the best Restaurants, Bars and Beauty Salons in the UK’s 2nd biggest city. It’s free for anyone to download and lists all of the special deals and offers for these places that people can take advantage of.

How and when did you come up with the idea to make an app?

I came up with the idea for the business in early 2013 when I realised that there were poorly presented alternatives in the local area not taking advantage of mobile technology. After months of research and planning I decided there was a big enough gap in the market and decided to develop ‘That Manchester App’.

What are the main features included in your apps?

That Manchester App’s features use a GPS location to establish which special deal is closest to the user as well as being filtered to a specific day of the week which allows for a great user experience within the special deal module. We’ve also allowed for user generated comments and photos to establish a sharing community, an obvious choice for any socially driven application or business.

How do you promote your app? What channels do you use and what do you find most successful?

That Manchester App wanted to build a community of ambassadors rather than customers. To do this we only allow someone to be able to use the app if they first login through Facebook or Twitter. This allows us to connect directly with our users through both platforms which establishes a personal relationship rather than age old and annoying methods such as email marketing.

What advice would you give to people who are planning to make an app?

When I first started to look into producing an application I was dissuaded by so many people because of the associated costs, time and effort needed. After sticking with the original plan I soon found that keeping things as simple as possible was key to it being a success, swamping users with too many or pointless features, bad graphics, imaging and design instantly turns people off and won’t get them coming back, your app is your shop front, be simple, fun and inviting.

How easy was to make the app using Shoutem?

With very little experience in coding and development I spent months trying to find a low cost solution to develop a true native application on both Android and iOS. My options were to either give a huge share in my company away to a developer in return for the development or spend thousands getting a developer to produce one, I didn’t want to start my company with debt or loss of shares and luckily Shoutem gave my App the foundations it needed to produce a fantastic looking application with easy to use features in very little time at all. Not only that but I managed to keep 100% shares of my company and start my first business with no financial debt. I now consider myself a bit of an expert with Shoutem’s software although any novice with the smallest amount of computer literacy could easily use it.
